Individual Psychotherapy for You

As the name suggests, individual therapy is all about the patient as an individual. People seek professional help for various issues.

 

The initial meeting or intake session lasts between 75 and 90 minutes.  During this session I am gathering information in various areas of your life.  We are also establishing the issues to be addressed in psychotherapy and the desired outcome of this process.  At the end of the meeting, I give you feedback about what I am hearing as areas of concern in your life and potential issues for psychotherapy.  If we are in agreement, we then discuss goals for therapy.  At this time, I can give you an indication of how often and how long we may need to meet to reach the desired outcome.  I can also address what kind of psychotherapy I can provide that may be helpful.  At this point in the process you will have some sense of my style and if I am the right therapist for you. 
 
I normally conduct an evaluation that will last from 2 to 4 sessions. During this time, I continue to gather more in-depth information as we further define the issues for focus in our sessions and appropriate treatment goals. Psychotherapy is usually scheduled for one 50-minute session (one appointment hour of 50 minutes duration) per week at a time we agree on, although some sessions may be longer or more frequent.
 
Once the patient starts feeling better, we may space our meetings to once every two or three weeks.  Generally speaking, patients come on a monthly basis for maintenance as they are preparing to take a break from therapy.  It is my general practice to provide ongoing care to my patients as needed throughout life changes.  You may return at any time for a "tune-up" or to assist in some new life transition.  This generally does not take as long to achieve as the original therapy and many have found this ongoing relationship very useful in navigating their issues throughout life.
 
When you enlist my services, you can expect to be treated with respect, understanding and compassion. I provide a warm, safe and comfortable setting and encourage you to work through issues at your own pace. But you will also be challenged and engaged -- only through hard work can we overcome the burdens of the past and look to a brighter future ahead.
