Marital/Couples Therapy

Relationships should provide both partners with a sense of happiness and fulfillment, but can often end up in fighting and hurt feelings. I can help couples work through their problems.

There's no reason to wait for problems to boil over before seeking out professional advice. The greatest sources of conflict often develop at the beginning of the relationship, but they don't become apparent until it's too late. I help couples to communicate positively from the get-go and avoid potential problems later on.

The initial couple session or intake lasts about 90 minutes.  Both parties are usually present at the initial meeting.  The first session is spent gathering information in various areas of your life, discussing the main areas of conflict or concern, and discussing how couple sessions may proceed.  If both parties are in agreement with my initial assessment, and we have established some rapport, we then discuss meeting together for regular sessions.

In the first two to four sessions I take some time to diagram and fully explain how the couple relationship functions.  We will address the impact your specific issues are having on your relationship dynamics.  This clarity provides a model that we can use to evaluate our work together, as well as providing patients with a tool for homework and to maintain focus during the week(s) between sessions.

Regular marital or couple therapy sessions last for 50 minutes and are usually conducted on a once a week basis for several meetings until some progress has been made.  Once the couple has a good sense of what they are  working on in therapy and how these issues affect their dynamics, couples usually attend sessions once every two weeks.  Many couples maintain their progress with monthly follow-up sessions for 4 to 12 months after they have achieved some of their goals.

Couples may return to therapy at any time to address new concerns or relapse issues.   It can be normal for couples to return to old patterns or issues under stress or change.

Couples may experience relationship difficulty at various junctures in their relationship.  It is appropriate to seek consultation and therapy at these various milestones and throughout the lifespan in order to make the most of our connections and relationships.
